Alena finally knows the true meaning of freedom, having spent the entire five years of her life on a chain. Due to her sweet disposition, you probably wouldn’t be able to tell that the only life she ever knew was one of pain and neglect. A five-year-old Lab mix, Alena needed a place to go no later than May 31st, or else she would be surrendered to the Sumter County Animal Shelter in South Carolina. The years of inattention took an obvious toll on this girl, and unfortunately, she had never been taken to a vet.

Animal advocate, Lisa Saunders, agreed to take Alena on May 30th so that she could get a vet check-up and continue to network for a rescue. Her years of neglect showed up with Alena testing high heartworm positive,  and she was also loaded with other worms: hook, round, whip and tapeworms. Alena was also infested with fleas. Lisa said, “I seriously have never seen this many fleas!”

On June 1st, Melissa Bielawski with Ollie’s Angels Animal Rescue in New York asked RADAR to help with Alena. The rescue wanted to help Alena, but needed assistance with her heartworm treatment costs. We agreed to help, and Alena officially had rescue commitment! Alena received her treatment on August 7th.

“Even though she has lived on a chain her entire five years, Alena is still a wonderfully sweet and loving dog,” Melissa said. “She has not had it easy, and she deserves a chance at a wonderful life.” To see more photos of Alena, click here.

RADAR paid all $201 of the heartworm treatment costs for Alena.
