Amelia may not have had hemophilia, but she did have heartworms. And that did not bode well for Amelia at the Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina, where she arrived on May 6th. The shelter’s policy prohibits heartworm positive dogs from even having the opportunity to be adopted. The only hope for this two-year-old Bully Breed mix would be a rescue commitment.
On May 24th, Mary Lou Seymour with the The Heart Beat Goes On program went to work to find a rescue for Amelia. Having no luck, but not willing to give up on Amelia, Shelter Animals Advocates, the parent organization of The Heart Beat Goes On, wanted to pull Amelia, but needed funding help for her heartworm treatment. Mary Lou asked for our assistance on June 9th. We agreed in order to secure Amelia’s rescue commitment.
On June 21st, Amelia received her heartworm treatment. December Clark, Mary Lou’s partner with The Heart Beat Goes On, told us this about Amelia: “She’s a timid girl, but oh so sweet! Amelia ended up at the shelter when she was seized by animal control due to her owners providing inadequate food, water and shelter for her. She is a really nice girl!” To view more photos of Amelia, click here.
RADAR paid all $375 of the heartworm treatment costs for Amelia.
