Angus, a somewhat shy Labrador Retriever mix, wants everyone to know that he is no relation to the more famous Angus McDuck, uncle to the cartoon character Scrooge McDuck. This very real dog was picked up as a stray and arrived at the Darlington County Humane Society in South Carolina on February 2nd. This seven to eight-year-old found himself on the shelter’s ‘urgent’ list, as his heartworm status was positive.

Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, requested RADAR’s help on May 3rd. Home At Last Dog Rescue in Pennsylvania wanted to take Angus if his heartworms could be treated. Could we sponsor his heartworm treatment? We agreed, and Angus completed his split treatment on June 11th and July 9th.

Angus was very timid at first, but with the help of shelter volunteers, he began to realize that coming out into the exercise pen meant walking and getting love. A ride in a wheelbarrow pushed by volunteers proved a turning point. Angus interacts politely with other dogs he meets and walks nicely on a leash. Angus says, “I can only improve and get brave if someone like you takes a chance on someone like me! Please, won’t you help me and take me home today?” Click here to view more photos of Angus.

RADAR paid all of the heartworm treatment costs for Angus, which totaled $479.
