August arrived at the shelter in September, where she languished through October. Then in November, with a RADAR assistance incentive, she was rescued. Deep in December, and after receiving her heartworm treatment, she became RADAR’s 400th assisted dog! August is a good poster dog of a RADAR at-risk dog: heartworm positive and a large black dog in a rural kill shelter.
On September 19th, this four to five-year-old Lab mix arrived as a stray at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. Working with Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, on November 9th RADAR provided an assistance offer to cover August’s heartworm treatment as an incentive for a rescue to take her.
The next day, Puppy Paws Rescue in Maryland agreed to take August! Because she was so scared at the shelter, she went immediately to a temporary foster home. This foster family, which Susan described as one of the best ever, specializes in working with frightened dogs like August. On December 10th, August had her heartworm treatment done.
Susan shared this with us about August: “At the shelter, August was much more comfortable in the company of other dogs and in the safety of her kennel, where she would come to the gate for treats or greet visitors. But outside of her kennel, she became a bit of a statue dog. August was not jumpy or aggressive, just very scared. She needed to get out of the shelter and find a patient person to help build her trust.” And that’s just what happened. Her foster family says August is one of the most beautiful Labs that they have ever seen!” Click here to view more photos of August.
RADAR paid all $298 of the heartworm treatment costs for August.
