Whatever the Hollywood moguls said about Ava Gardner, the same could be said of Ava, our leading lady: “She can’t sing, she can’t act, she can’t talk. She’s terrific!” and “She is the world’s most beautiful animal.” Ava is an eight-year-old super-sweet Boxer mix whose owner surrendered her to the Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina on September 3rd. Unfortunately, Ava would not be the feature presentation on the adoption floor: she had tested positive for heartworms. To the back lot she went, to wait for one of two things: a casting call from a rescue, or her “put to sleep” date.
Fade to black until September 21st when Mary Lou Seymour of The Heart Beat Goes On program started to publicize Ava’s plight. Mary Lou accomplishes magic behind the scenes, but it is always a challenge to distinguish one heartworm positive dog from another. Making Ava even more difficult to promote was that she is a senior. RADAR did not want Ava’s chances of adoption to end up on the cutting room floor. We offered to assist with the cost of Ava’s heartworm treatment as an incentive for a rescue to take her.
Happily, Dog Star Rescue in Connecticut was able to pull Ava, thanks to our funding. Ava was safe on September 30th. She had her heartworm treatment on October 5th and 6th. Ava is loving and gentle. She does not object to cats in her fan club. All she asks for is a spot on the casting couch! Click here to see more photos of Ava.
RADAR paid $300 towards Ava’s heartworm treatment costs.
