A change of heart is one thing, but with Axel it was a change of heartworm status, and not just once, but twice! Animal control found Axel as a stray October 13th, and took him to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. Two to three years old and a large Labrador Retriever mix, Axel tested heartworm positive. On November 6th RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, Susan Blakeney, asked for our help. Home At Last Dog Rescue in Pennsylvania was interested in taking Axel if he could first get his heartworm treatment done. We agreed.
A few hours later came word that Axel was adopted from the shelter. Hooray! End of story, right? Nope. On November 10th, Axel’s adopters returned him to the shelter. The reason? He was too big. Hmmm, he was just as big when they adopted him a few days earlier! Once more, Home at Last Dog Rescue agreed to take Axel, and we agreed to help.
And then came the next twist. When Axel went for his heartworm treatment on November 22nd, he tested negative! That allowed him to get on the November 28th transport to go to his rescue. But that still wasn’t the end of the story! On December 9th we received word that Axel retested heartworm positive. The problem was that he was now in Pennsylvania, where treatment is much more costly. To better share the burden, RADAR challenged the Darlington folks to a match. If they raised $250, we would provide $250, with the rescue covering the rest of the estimated $700 to $800 cost. The challenge was met, and Axel had his initial heartworm treatment on December 16th.
There was this description of Axel from his time at the shelter: “Axel is a sweetheart and a big lover. The kennel run was a scary place for him, so when I took him out for a walk he just wanted to walk between my legs. He walked very well beside me once we got off the kennel run, and was happy to be out and getting lots of attention. He found out he really liked squeaky toys and was so curious of how that noise was made!” Click here to view more photos of Axel.
RADAR paid $250 towards Axel’s heartworm treatment costs.
