Bacardi

Bacardi, a three- to four-year-old Shepherd mix, might have needed a drink or two had she known what her heartworm positive status meant. She arrived at the  Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina along with her two older puppies on December 17th. This honey-coated lady and her puppies were strays. Bacardi needed some caring people to cure her heartworms and pull her from the crowded kill shelter.

It all came together for Bacardi. One Life to Live Rescue and Adoption in Pennsylvania wanted to save her and her puppies, but needed assistance with the expensive heartworm treatment. Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, asked RADAR on January 25th for our help with the heartworm expenses. We agreed to assist Bacardi. She was able to have her heartworm treatment right away since she had finished nursing her puppies, and the treatment was completed on January 28th.

Susan reports that Bacardi was shy on arrival to the shelter but blossomed under the shelter’s care. “Bacardi turned all the heads with her semi-shag coat and sweet, endearing little smile. Bacardi is snuggly and happy to hang by your side. She is calm, polite and gentle in her ways.  A skilled leash walker, Bacardi was open to sharing a walk at the shelter with a larger, happy male who, like her, is respectful of boundaries and space. Bacardi has a fun, playful side to her but likely won’t wish to engage in wrestling activities with other dogs nor run and retrieve a ball that you toss for her! She is a more refined lady who enjoys some peace and quiet, and would likely enjoy backyard gardening and simply chilling with other four-legged friends. Although tipping the scales at over 50lbs, she has a smaller presence and feel about her.” Be sure to view more photos in Bacardi’s gallery.

RADAR paid all $235 of the heartworm treatment costs for Bacardi.
