While Baloo was the main character in “The Jungle Book,” this Baloo was far from being the top dog at the shelter. The shy one to two-year-old Dachshund mix was surrendered to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina on January 5th. He went unnoticed for over two months by both rescues and adopters. Being black made him less visible, and testing positive for heartworms only added to his woes.

On March 10th, Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, sought our help for Baloo. At long last, a rescue was interested! To Love a Canine Rescue in Pennsylvania would take Baloo if his heartworm treatment costs could be covered. We agreed to assist.

Baloo had his heartworm treatment done on March 15th. We were told this about Baloo: “Getting placed in a temporary foster home helped Baloo overcome his shyness. He was finally able to to relax and gain more confidence. He is fine with other dogs. He now seems to smile when he wags his tail!” To see more photos of Baloo, click here.

RADAR paid all $159 of the heartworm treatment costs for Baloo.
