Instead of Beetle Bailey, it’s Beagle Barney! This nine-year-old arrived as a stray on August 10th at the Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina. Bad enough to be a senior dog at a shelter, but because Barney tested heartworm positive he was not even eligible for adoption at this shelter. It would take a rescue commitment to save his life.

On August 20th, Mary Lou Seymour of Shelter Animals Advocates and its Heart Beat Goes On program got just the rescue commitment Barney needed. Dog Star Rescue in Connecticut would take him, but there was one caveat: funding would be needed for his heartworm treatment. Mary Lou turned to RADAR for assistance, and we agreed!

The first order of business for Barney was to recover from a severe flea allergy. Because of his age, Barney’s heartworm treatment had to be done over an extended time, with the treatment completed on October 4th. December Clark, Mary Lou’s partner with Shelter Animals Advocates and The Heart Beat Goes On program, described Barney this way: “This is a super nice, unassuming sweetheart of a dog!” Barney’s rescue tells us that he “is as sweet as they come. This older gentleman is well behaved and well-mannered. Age is just a number for our Barney. He looks forward to many more years of adventures sniffing, walking and meeting new people and other dogs. Barney has enjoyed hanging out with the other dogs he has met and is the wise older guy giving advice on how to sniff out the best spots and how to get the attention of the humans the fastest. Our sweet southern gentleman can’t wait to impress his new family with his manners, sweetness and all around good natured personality.” Click here to view more photos of Barney.

RADAR paid all of Barney’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $335.
