With Batman, one picture is worth far more than a thousand words. The heart-wrenching photo of a terrified and despondent Batman chained to a fence with a heavy, short chain and sitting in a puddle of muck makes him the perfect poster child for bait dogs. The photo was taken just prior to intervention by animal control. Batman’s story follows, so get your tissues ready for tears of despair and joy…
Skinny, wounded and abused, Batman bears the scars of a bait dog. Many bait dogs have telltale signs of abuse: evidence of duct tape wrapped around their snouts to prevent them from fighting back; teeth that are deliberately broken to prevent them from fighting back; scars on their faces, front legs, hind end and thighs. Batman’s passivity marked him as a bait dog at birth. His role in the world he was born into was to be used to test a dog’s fighting instinct. Thankfully for Batman, his owner was arrested on charges of animal abuse and cruelty. Batman was seized in the raid and brought to the Sampson County Animal Shelter in North Carolina on August 10th. He was emaciated, scarred and heartworm positive. To look at Batman was to feel your heart break.
Batman’s life improved the day he was removed from his owner’s illegal dog-fighting operation. On August 23rd, Batman received a second blessing in the person of Laura Roberts, who heads up the Road Home Rescue in North Carolina. Laura wanted to pull Batman, but could not afford the cost of treating his heartworms. RADAR agreed to cover the expense, and the next day the one to two-year-old Pit Bull was on his way to a foster home. He had his heartworm treatment on September 14th.
Batman’s foster mom, Paula Ballard, fell in love with the gentle dog who, despite all he had suffered at the hands of his cruel owner, found it in his heart to forgive humans. Paula’s heart melted when she took Batman for his first leash-walk. “He gently jumped up and put his paws around my waist and just stared at me, thanking me with his eyes. It was something I will never ever forget. Batman has taught me about the true meaning of forgiveness.” Paula promised Batman that no one would ever hurt him again. And to make sure of that, she adopted him! Click here to view more photos of Batman.
RADAR paid all of Batman’s heartworm treatment costs, totaling $189.
