Want to “Feel the Bern?” Just pet Bernadette! A three-year-old Beagle mix, Bernadette was found as a stray and taken to the Chesterfield County Animal Services shelter in South Carolina on November 24th. She was very thin, very frightened and very pregnant. Two days later she gave birth to five healthy puppies! Unfortunately for Bernadette, she tested heartworm positive.

On December 15th, the shelter contacted RADAR seeking our assistance for Bernadette. Paws and Claws Animal Rescue in South Carolina was interested in taking Bernadette and her puppies, but needed help with the heartworm treatment costs. We agreed, and Bernadette and her furry family were off to their foster home! After weaning her pups, Bernadette received her heartworm treatment on February 16th and 17th.

“Bernadette is a nice dog,” her foster Karen told us. “She gets along well with all my other dogs. While she is interested in my indoor cats, she doesn’t actually go after any of them. She does climb out of short pens and digs out under gates, and wiggles through fences! She weighs only 18 pounds, so she is a small Beagle. She’s very submissive if you want to pick her up, but will stand up on you to get petted!” Click here to view more photos of Bernadette.

RADAR paid all of Bernadette’s heartworm treatment costs, totaling $164.

UPDATE! All funds for Bernadette have been raised! Thank you!
