Bess was named after Harry Houdini’s wife, Wilhelmina Beatrice “Bess” Rahner, after proving herself to be a masterful escape artist! This two to three-year-old, blue-eyed Husky mix was brought to the Surry County Animal Control shelter on May 8th as a stray. Poor Bess was so terrified that she was constantly shaking and had to be pulled from the shelter and taken to a foster home, but before long she dug a hole under the fence and escaped! Using sleight of hand and sheer wit, she initially managed to evade two well-meaning captors, but was eventually caught and taken to another foster with a more secure electric fence. While Bess had been able to break free of many things on her own, she would need help escaping a big one: heartworms.
Mayberry 4 Paws, an organization that helps facilitate and find rescues for at-risk dogs at the Surry County shelter, reached out to RADAR for help with the costs of the heartworm treatment for Bess. Mayberry 4 Paws would facilitate her heartworm treatment and find a rescue placement for her. We agreed to assist, and she received her treatment on June 6th. Bess then got a placement with Carolina Canine Rescue in North Carolina.
“Bess is very sociable with dogs large and small,” we were told by her foster, Angela Schmoll. “She is a little timid and likely to go into a submissive pose when seeking attention. She can be difficult to get your hands on if she’s not ready for her game to end!” Click here to view more photos of Bess.
RADAR paid all of the heartworm treatment costs for Bess, which totaled $250.
