“All in good time” is one thing, but for Blacky it was a very, very long time. It was way back on August 21st of 2015 when Blacky was surrendered to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. An eight-year-old Chow Chow mix, Blacky had spent his entire life tied outside. His owners decided that they no longer wanted Blacky, so off to the shelter he went. Not surprisingly for a dog kept outside and neglected, Blacky had heartworms.

Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, reached out to us for help with Blacky on October 1st because he was on the shelter’s “put to sleep” list. We provided an offer to cover his heartworm treatment costs as an incentive for a rescue to take him. But Blacky never could garner a rescue commitment because his behavior with other dogs was questionable. However, with our assistance offer on the table and many folks at the shelter liking Blacky, his life was spared by moving him to the humane society’s Bridge facility. While he was safely out of the shelter, he was left in limbo without a rescue.

At long last in early June, Home At Last Dog Rescue in Pennsylvania expressed interest in taking Blacky, but only if he could be placed with an experienced foster to better evaluate his interaction with other dogs in a home environment. Fortunately, a foster was found and Blacky did fine. He received his heartworm treatment on July 12th. “I think he is enjoying having a yard to play in,” his foster said. “But he likes the air conditioning! We are keeping him out of the heat of the day. He is eating well and we have taken him on a couple of long walks. So far, so good.” To view more photos of Blacky, click here.

RADAR paid all $185 of the heartworm treatment costs for Blacky.
