Bo is a very short name for a very big guy. But when he arrived at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina on October 11th, five-year-old Bo was very underweight for a Great Pyrenees and his coat was brittle, filthy and matted due to malnutrition and general lack of care. You see, Bo had been living in horrible conditions, behind chain link fencing, tarps, pieces a wood, and weeds. His human mother had died and her son surrendered Bo to the shelter. Bo was sweet and calm and was fine with both the cats and dogs that he met, but he was very confused at the disruption of his life. His coat had to be shaved off as it was in very bad shape. To add to Bo’s woes, he was heartworm positive.

On October 11th, Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, requested our help for Bo. Home At Last Dog Rescue in Pennsylvania was interested in taking Bo if his costly heartworm treatment could be covered. We said we would help. After a few delays, on November 10th, Bo was on his way to Pennsylvania. Bo started to regain his health under the foster’s care. His heartworm treatments took place on January 16th and on February 13th and 14th.

Bo’s personality blossomed in foster care. They fell in love with him, and Bo was adopted by his foster family. His new human mom, Christine, told us this: “Bo proposed, and we said yes! This big lug just stole our hearts, and he fits in beautifully with our dogs and welcomes other dogs. Because of his perfect temperament and size, I hope to train him as a therapy dog to visit nursing homes.” To see more photos of Bo, from where he was found to his forever home photos, click here.

RADAR paid all $719 of the heartworm treatment costs for Bo.

Thank you so much for helping Bo overcome heartworm! Now not only is he loved in his new home, but we hope he will be able to share love with many more people as a therapy dog. He will be awesome! To think that this beautiful, gentle, loving boy could have spent the rest of his life living in a pile of trash in someone’s back yard is unbearable. You do great work! — Bo’s foster AND adoptive mom
