There was no time to lobby for Bobby. Emergency veterinary care was needed immediately for this eight-month-old Jack Russell mix on the morning of September 23rd. Bobby was found by a man a week earlier. Bobby’s front right leg was badly injured, but the man could not afford to take Bobby to the vet. When someone reported the injured dog to animal control, the man was advised to take the dog to the shelter. So he surrendered Bobby to the Lee County Animal Services shelter in North Carolina.
Upon arriving at the shelter, the staff observed that Bobby’s right front leg was dangling in a zig-zag manner and was severely swollen with purulent drainage. Lacking the ability to fund any medical care for Bobby, the shelter immediately contacted both RADAR and the local Lending Paws A Hand rescue to see if we could help Bobby. Mary Ashburn with the rescue and RADAR agreed to assist at once.
Within just a few hours of Bobby’s surrender to the shelter he was whisked off to the vet by the rescue. An exam and x-rays revealed that Bobby had a severe crush injury to the bones of his leg and the infection could quickly lead to sepsis. The decision was made to amputate the leg. The amputation took place the next day, September 24th. Bobby was also neutered while undergoing the amputation surgery.
We were told this about Bobby from his foster mom: “This boy is sweet. At first when I brought him home, he was quite timid. After a few days, he warmed up, obviously seeing consistency and love. He did great at his first adoption event. There was no barking at other dogs, he enjoyed people giving him attention and did well with children. We are excited that we will be able to place him in a great home. He is a total sweetheart!” To see more photos of Bobby, click here.
RADAR paid $300 towards Bobby’s emergency care, x-rays, amputation and neutering costs.
