Not saving Brooke could have caused a donnybrook! The family of this five to six-year-old Shepherd mix was no longer able to care for her, so they surrendered her to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina on December 17th. Sadly, the shelter would be Brook’e home for the holidays. Even worse, she tested positive for heartworms. What Brooke needed was a holiday miracle.
And that’s just what began to unfold the day after Christmas. To Love a Canine Rescue in Pennsylvania offered to take Brooke if her heartworm treatment costs could be covered. Weighing in at approximately 50 pounds, it would be costly. But Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, decided to ask us for a belated Christmas gift for Brooke in the form of a grant to cover her heartworm treatment. We agreed and Brooke was safe! She received her heartworm treatment on February 14th.
We were told this about Brooke during her time at the shelter: “Miss Manners! Brooke sets the standard for super-polite and well-mannered pooches. Delicately stepping out of her kennel, which she nicely shared with a quiet female dog, Brooke turned all the heads as she headed out for her walk in the front field. With the wind whipping through her long, luxurious jacket of two-tone fur, she was all smiles and tail wags! Never meeting a stranger, Brooke is gentle, sweet and friendly. She is your pet of choice if you are looking to add a pet to a home loaded with kids and other dogs.” To see more photos of Brooke, click here.
RADAR paid all $329 of the heartworm treatment costs for Brooke.
