Since Bruce was found as a stray, we could say that Bruce was on the loose! This two to three-year-old Hound mix was picked up by animal control on May 15th and taken to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. A wonderful dog like Bruce should have been easily rescued or adopted. But because Bruce tested heartworm positive, there were no takers. On July 7th, Bruce’s name was added to the shelter’s “put to sleep” list for July 13th.

Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, wasted no time in contacting us for help with Bruce on July 7th. As an incentive for a rescue to take him, we provided an offer to cover his heartworm treatment costs. Just in time, One Life to Live Pet Rescue and Adoption in Pennsylvania came forward to take Bruce! He received his heartworm treatment on August 9th.

“Wiggle Butt!” is how Susan described Bruce. “Folks take one look at him and just smile. He’s an infectiously fun guy who has never met a stranger. Bruce is very interactive with both dogs and people. He’s super friendly and affectionate. He’s happy and carefree in his outlook on life. Bruce will be your go-to pet when you’re feeling down and need a pep talk, your partner in crime as you explore new hiking trails, and your devoted snuggle buddy!” Click here to view more photos of Bruce.

RADAR paid all of Bruce’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $272.
