Unlike with Casey at the Bat striking out and bringing no joy to Mudville, this Casey did not strike out at the shelter and brought joy to Muttville! On March 1st, Casey arrived as a stray at the Lee County Animal Shelter in South Carolina. Two to three years old and Rottweiler-Labrador Retriever mix, Casey was terrified at the shelter. However, with some TLC he soon became very sweet. Little did Casey realize that by testing heartworm positive he was indeed at high risk for striking out at this high-kill rural shelter.
On April 13th, Brandi Sowell, RADAR’s liaison with the Lee County Animal Shelter, went to bat for Casey by asking for our help with his heartworm treatment costs. As an incentive for a rescue to take him, we provided an offer to assist. On April 21st, Brandi shared the great news with us that A New Chance Animal Rescue in New York agreed to take Casey! His initial heartworm treatment took place on May 25th.
The rescue had this to tell us about Casey: “He’s a great boy and has really come out of his shell. He definitely gets along well one-on-one with people but does struggle a little in his interactions with other dogs. We are working on this with him. Casey has become very playful with people, but he’s not as accepting when the other dogs join in to play. He listens well and is a pretty low-key guy in general. This sweet boy even lets the cats rub up against him. Casey is a darling boy who seems like he hasn’t had that much interaction with other dogs, so we’re just working on his social skills!” Click here to view more photos of Casey.
RADAR paid $300 towards Casey’s heartworm treatment costs.
