Hi there! It’s me, Cecil. Let me tell you my story. I’m a two-year-old Shepherd mix. Way back on January 9th, I was picked up by something called animal control. Next thing you know, I’m at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. What a terribly scary place that is! It was all too much for a shy guy like me. I noticed that other dogs would leave the shelter, but I just stayed. It must have been because I was heartworm positive. It was a long, cold and lonely winter for me at the shelter.
Finally, spring arrived. Since I am so shy, I had been quietly hanging around under the radar hoping that no one would notice me, but alas, the euthanasia committee (talk about a death panel!) spotted me. My time was about up. I was placed on the dreaded Put To Sleep list for April 9th.
When the folks at RADAR saw that my time was nearly up, they offered to cover my costly heartworm treatment to help encourage a rescue to take me. And it worked! On April 8th, with just a day to spare, Home At Last Dog Rescue in Pennsylvania agreed to take me! I got my heartworm treatment done on April 23rd. Thank goodness that’s over!
This was an entry in my diary from my days at the shelter: “I’ve come out of my kennel (that’s me, peaking out)! You see, I have been feeling totally overwhelmed here at the shelter. Today, however, was MY day. After a little coaxing from a volunteer, off we went to explore the open field. I’ll tell you, the sunshine felt so terrific! I smiled more than I have in many weeks. My new human friend was super about giving me hugs and praise for my superb manners and eloquent walking style.” Click here to see more photos of me.
RADAR paid all $310 of the heartworm treatment costs for Cecil.
