What would you call two episodes of panting by this this khaki-colored canine? Yes, a pair of Chino pants! A one to two-year-old Boxer blend, Chino arrived at the Chester County Animal Care & Control shelter in South Carolina on March 31st. He was surrendered by his owners. While we don’t know why, we do know that his life was at risk at this crowded rural shelter. Adding to the concern for Chino was the revelation that he was heartworm positive.

On April 21st, RADAR provided an offer to assist with the cost of Chino’s heartworm treatment as an incentive for a rescue to take him. Despite lots of networking and our offer, Chino garnered no rescue interest. Then things took a potentially devastating turn for Chino. On the morning of May 19th, Chino was involved in a fight with another dog at the shelter. While this is hardly surprising in the stressful shelter environment, it can be a death sentence for the dogs. The shelter staff placed Chino in isolation and under observation for a few weeks. Fortunately, the outcome was a good one for Chino. After reevaluating him it was determined that he is very loving of people, does well with dogs and even cats. He is not an alpha dog, but a follower, and he shows no signs of aggression.

With Chino becoming increasingly urgent as the weeks and months passed, a rescue finally stepped up! On August 18th, Friends of Freddie Pet Rescue in New York agreed to take him! He received his heartworm treatment on September 16th. Here are some of the things we were told about Chino: “He is a happy-go-lucky boy who is goofy and full of energy. Chino really loves people, and would get so lonely without them at the shelter that he would cry all night.” Click here to see more photos of Chino.

RADAR paid all $350 of Chino’s heartworm treatment costs.
