Courtney

Courtney’s story is such a sad one, filled with so many twists and turns. Estimated to be four to five years old, Courtney is a Beagle mix who arrived as a stray at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina on December 7th. It was obvious that she hadn’t had proper care. She also tested heartworm positive. Just days before Christmas, her owner showed up to reclaim Courtney. He said that she had “gone missing.” However, when he realized that he had to pay a fee to reclaim her, he left in a huff, leaving Courtney at the shelter.

In early January, Courtney began coughing. She was diagnosed and treated for pneumonia. An urgent plea went out for a rescue to take her. On January 21st, One Life to Live Rescue and Adoption in Pennsylvania offered to take Courtney if they could get her heartworm treatment done and paid. RADAR was asked to help, and we agreed to cover the costs.

Then on January 31st, and totally unexpected by anyone, Courtney gave birth to seven pups! Katie Flaherty kindly opened her heart and home to foster Courtney and her pups. One Life to Live Rescue agreed to take the five surviving pups. Meanwhile, Courtney’s heartworm treatment was put on hold until her puppies were weaned. On April 15th, she received her first heartworm treatment. When Courtney went back for her second treatment on May 13th, she had developed a cough, and the vet indicated that her lungs did sound good, so her treatment was postponed for another month.

When Courtney returned to the vet on June 10th, she was still coughing. A thorough examination and x-rays revealed that she has congestive heart failure. The vet indicated that she only has several months of quality life left. There would be no more heartworm treatment. Her health was too compromised for her transport to the rescue. Katie and her husband agreed to keep Courtney in their foster care for her remaining time. To see more photos of Courtney and her pups, click here.

RADAR paid $78 for Courtney’s initial heartworm treatment costs.

God Bless you Katie & Husband for caring enough to give this lovely lady, Courtney, a quality life and for caring for her babies too. It is rewarding saving a life; but, when you know the outcome ahead of time it can be difficult. Thank you!
