What happened to Crackers on April 1st was far from an April Fools’ Day prank. This one-year old Lab mix was hit by a car, resulting in a badly broken back left leg. His family could not afford the necessary surgery. Rather than euthanize him, they surrendered Crackers to the Chester County Animal Care Control shelter in South Carolina. The folks at the shelter had to act fast to help Crackers. The surgery to repair his broken leg, requiring plates and screws, would cost about $750. Not only would the shelter need the funding, but they also had to find a rescue that would commit to take him following the surgery.
On April 2nd, RADAR received an urgent request from the shelter to see if we could commit to help with Crackers. We immediately offered to cover up to $250 of what could not be raised otherwise for his surgery. With help from other donors, enough was quickly pledged to proceed with the surgery. All that was needed now was a rescue commitment. On April 3rd, PETS, Inc., a rescue in South Carolina, agreed to take Crackers!
Crackers had his successful surgery on April 4th, and on April 9th he went to PETS, Inc. While a total of $750 was raised from donors (including a very generous donor who provided $400!), the final vet bil was $850. RADAR covered the $100 difference. By the way, Crackers got his name because his fur is the color of saltines!
RADAR paid the remaining $100 balance of the surgery bill for Crackers.
