It was crystal clear that Crystal, a twelve-year-old Bully Breed mix, needed a helping hand or two when she arrived at the Lee County Animal Services shelter in North Carolina. She had been abandoned by her owners when they moved and a neighbor had taken her in. Unfortunately, the neighbor could not keep her, so Crystal arrived at the shelter on February 7th. Crystal was sweet and friendly but she was a senior, overweight, had no record of veterinary care, needed to be tested for heartworms and was a Bully Breed. Would any rescue be able to handle Crystal’s need for veterinary care? The shelter was full and Crystal was in danger.
On February 14th, RADAR received a request for assistance with Crystal’s veterinary costs from Kelly Chalkley of Sunshine Senior Dog Sanctuary in Virginia. The rescue wanted to save Crystal but needed financial help with her medical expenses. We committed to helping her. Crystal’s visit to the rescue’s Virginia veterinarian was delayed due to a neck wound sustained during a tiff with another dog. The wound itself wasn’t that bad but Crystal scratched it open, requiring the wound to be drained. Crystal recovered from the wound and was able to be transferred to the rescue in Virginia. She had veterinary care and x-rays on March 12th.
Crystal was also discovered to be heartworm positive and the rescue will get her treated. She is described by her Virginia foster as a “sweet, gentle and laid back girl.” Crystal’s foster is trying to get Crystal to lose a little weight from her current 99-pounds so that her heartworm treatment will be easier on her body. Be sure to view more photos in Crystal’s gallery.
RADAR paid $250 towards the vetting and x-ray costs for Crystal.
