Damon needed namin’ when he arrived at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina on April 24th. That’s because this one- to two-year-old Bully Breed mix was picked up by animal control as a somewhat underweight stray, and his owner never came for him. So why did this very friendly and loving fellow end up on the ‘Urgent List’ for three weeks in a row? Time was running out for Damon because he tested positive for heartworms. The cost of treating them is just too expensive for most adopters and rescues.
Damon was waiting for two things to happen to save him. The first happened when Out of the Pits rescue in New York expressed interest in rescuing Damon. He would need to be treated for heartworms before he could be transported north, so on July 11th, Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society, requested RADAR’s help. We fulfilled the second lifesaving condition by saying “Yes, we will help Damon!” Damon completed his heartworm treatment on August 13th.
The shelter had plenty of good things to tell us about Damon: “Playful and loving Damon is friendly and as handsome as he is affectionate and social. This fun guy has met several dog friends and has been relaxed and had a wagging tail for one and all. Damon greatly enjoyed his time outside in the exercise pen spent with our volunteers. He soaked up the attention and affection he got from them and had fun just hanging out. If you are looking for a new best friend, Damon is eager to step up. Damon would be a perfect match for a family pre-stocked with kids and other dogs. Give this great guy a chance, you won’t regret it!” Click here to view more photos of Damon.
RADAR paid all of Damon’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $351.
