Darcy is another darling dog from Darlington! This two to three-year-old German Shepherd mix arrived at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina on July 29th. Darcy was found as a stray and was extremely underweight. To make matters worse, she was also heartworm positive. Without any rescue or adopter interest, Darcy was placed on the shelter’s “Put To Sleep” list for October 1st.
On September 27th, as an incentive for a rescue to take Darcy, RADAR provided an offer to assist with her heartworm treatment costs. And just in time, on October 1st, Home At Last Dog Rescue in Pennsylvania agreed to take Darcy! When she went for her heartworm treatment on October 14th, she was only able to get one injection due to her low weight. This meant she had to get a two-injection follow-up treatment on November 18th. This increased her cost significantly. Fortunately, RADAR supporters Melissa Feeney and Rebecca Kuga helped cover some of the costs.
Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, told us this about her meeting with Darcy to take her photos at the shelter: “Darcy is one super sweet and very peaceful lady. Having quietly hung out in the back recess of her kennel and hoping no one would notice her, she stepped beautifully up to the plate for her photo session. Gently and politely we headed out towards a calm grassy area in front of the shelter, and you could just sense her relaxing. She cracked a smile and started wagging her tail! She interacted with other dogs quietly and considerately. However, Darcy is more apt to patiently wait by your side as you send words of encouragement her way.” Click here to view more photos of Darcy.
RADAR paid all of Darcy’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $421.
