It’s the adorable and dapper dog Dave from Darlington! This two-year-old Pit Bull mix arrived as a stray at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina on December 9th. Despite Dave’s charm and good looks, he had two big strikes against him: he was a Bully Breed mix and he was heartworm positive. On February 5th his name was added to the shelter’s dreaded “put to sleep” list for February 11th.
On February 5th, Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue sought our help for Dave. RADAR offered to cover Dave’s heartworm treatment as an incentive for a rescue to take him. A few days later the rescue Virginia Paws for Pits agreed to take Dave! Instead of being euthanized on February 11th, Dave found himself soaking up all the comforts of his temporary foster home, including sleeping in the master suite bed! He received his heartworm treatment on March 31st.
Susan shared Dave’s comments during her “interview” with him at the shelter: “Dave here, just hanging out getting my snuggles on. Belly-rub central, that’s me! I just love chilling with my person, draping across their lap and getting petted all over. In fact, when I see my person coming, I get so excited I stop, drop, and roll, and get supper wiggly! Other dogs are OK in my book, and I like to invite them to join in my playtime. I’m a friendly, sweet lovebug in an incredibly cute pocket-sized package. Can I come share my charm and affection with you? I’ll make sure you won’t regret it!” To view more photos of Dave, click here.
RADAR paid all of Dave’s heartworm treatment costs, totaling $200.
UPDATE! All funds for Dave have been raised! Thank you!
UPDATE! Dave has been adopted! His forever Mom, Stefanie, tells us that Dave “has become such a loved part of our family, and it brings me to tears to think of the possibility of him not being part of our family. I know that your job is tough and sometimes thankless, so I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for saving my baby’s life!”
