What would you call the sofa that this dog uses? Yes, a Devonport! And this very gentle and quiet guy would like nothing more than to relax on the sofa with you. Seven to eight years old and a Boxer-Bully Breed mix, Devon was surrendered to the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue shelter in South Carolina on November 8th. It was clear from the scars all over his body that this sad-eyed senior had not had an easy life. Adding to his woes, Devon was also heartworm positive. His prospects looked bleak indeed.
Rather than wait for Devon to get on the shelter’s “put to sleep,” on December 1st RADAR provided an offer to assist with his heartworm treatment as an incentive for a rescue to take him. A few days later, RADAR supporter Kathy O’Connor offered to cover RADAR’s costs for his heartworm treatment. As it got deeper into December, there still was no rescue interest in Devon.
It was time to double down for Devon. On December 22nd, RADAR offered to cover Devon’s initial vetting and neutering fees as well. And Kathy generously offered to cover those RADAR costs as well. The very next day the Virginia Paws for Pits Rescue agreed to take Devon! He received his heartworm treatment on January 21st.
Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, who had met Devon at the shelter, had this to share: “He was the master of the sad dog face at his photo shoot. He was much more spirited and chipper when I gave him attention. Devon has the typical Boxer back-end wiggle that he puts on display when he see someone coming to visit with him. And he was quick to roll over to get his belly scratched when I was petting him. He will make such a doting, wonderful pet. I’m so glad he made it out!” Click here to view more photos of Devon.
RADAR paid all of Devon’s initial vetting, neutering and heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $432.
