Ducky has been very plucky throughout her unusual circumstances at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. This shy one-year-old Labrador Retriever mix was surrendered on September 9th along with her six puppies, as her owner was unable to care for the family due to health issues. The puppies soon found a rescue but Ducky had tested heartworm positive, and that meant that adopters and rescues would be leery of taking on the costs of treating her heartworms.

Ducky was fearful in part due to being in quarantine when she first arrived at the shelter due to a parvovirus scare. Despite her fear, she showed no signs of aggression and relaxed in time, especially when another dog was there with her to give her confidence. Despite her shyness that might need some extra work, Home At Last Dog Rescue was willing to take Ducky on, if she could be treated for heartworms first. Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, asked RADAR if we would cover the heartworm treatment costs on October 20th. We committed to Ducky, and she completed her heartworm treatment on November 26th.

“Ducky’s best friend is another dog (or two) by her side,” Susan told us. “She’s instantly much more relaxed and at ease when she’s near or next to another dog. Despite Ducky’s shyness, she will become a wonderful pet with some time and patience. Having another dog around is absolutely key for her to develop into a loving companion. Ducky is such a sweet lady!” Click here to view more photos of Ducky.

RADAR paid all of Ducky’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $220.
