Prince William is the Duke of Cambridge, but this dog is the Duke of Chester! Approximately four years old, Duke is a Treeing Walker Coonhound mix who arrived as a stray way back in late July at the Chester County Animal Care & Control shelter in South Carolina. Not only was Duke just another Hound dog, but he was also heartworm positive. This was was not a good combination at an overcrowded rural shelter, and for months Duke’s life was on the line.
As an incentive for a rescue to take Duke, on October 2nd, the shelter asked RADAR to provide an offer to assist with his heartworm treatment – we said “yes!” On October 30th, Last Chance Animal Rescue in New York expressed interest in taking Duke if they could find a local foster for him during his heartworm treatment. On November 5th, RADAR supporter Leslie Platt offered to foster Duke, sealing the deal! He had his heartworm treatment done on December 19th.
Emily Ward, an advocate and photographer for the Chester County dogs, offered these observations from her visits with Duke at the shelter: “He was so quiet and laid-back in his kennel. He is lovable, and loves to be hugged and have his ears rubbed. He is a very social doggie. He needs to gain some weight, but is as handsome as all heck. On one visit he sang because he was so happy, drawing the attention of everyone! This boy is a sweetheart!” Click here to see more photos of Duke.
RADAR paid all $306 of the heartworm treatment costs for Duke.
UPDATE! All funds for Duke have been raised! Thank you!
UPDATE! Duke’s foster Mom tells us that Duke “is very friendly. He loves everyone. When he greets me, he jumps up, puts his paws on my shoulders, and licks my face. Mind you, this is with me standing at my full height. He loves to eat. If I have food, he will follow me anywhere. He is full of energy. When he can, he runs like the wind.”
