Earl

Earl just wanted to curl up with someone and experience human warmth. The three to five-year-old Hound-Labrador Retriever mix with the insecure eyes was picked up as a stray on November 21st and brought to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. Shelter staff could see that Earl was “rough around the edges” and had obviously not been raised with love and appreciation. But he had a worse problem: he tested positive for heartworms.

Susan Blakeney is RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue. Susan’s toes curl when she sees a down-and-out dog like Earl, at risk for being put to sleep if the shelter needs space. And Earl had been given a date: February 17th. Any time after that date, Earl could be euthanized. Susan asked for our help on February 11th. We provided an offer to cover the high cost of Earl’s heartworm treatment in order to make it possible for a rescue to take him. On February 18th, a rescue decided to “give it a whirl with Earl!” He had his heartworm treatment on February 23rd.

Earl has a “no-nonsense” approach to his activities; he doesn’t stop and smell the roses. He is a strong puller on the leash and straight ahead on the walk. He hasn’t had the experience of bonding with a human, so he doesn’t know the pleasures of give and take in a relationship. But, shelter staff see potential in Earl. He enjoyed being petted, even gave kisses and got all wiggly. Earl needs a patient, soft-hearted soul who is willing to spend the time earning Earl’s love and trust. Earl has no love for cats, however! Click here to view more photos of Earl.

RADAR paid all of Earl’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $281.
