All in favor of helping Ellie, say “Eye.” When Ellie was surrendered to the Hampton County Animal Shelter in South Carolina on July 11th, she had a very swollen left eye. The owners of this five-year-old Bassett Hound were elderly and felt they could no longer take care of her. One day Ellie wandered from their house and visited a neighbor; when she returned she had the swollen eye. Her owners think she was hit by the neighbor. Fearing for her life they turned her over to the shelter, where she unfortunately tested positive for heartworms.
On July 24th, Mary Lou Seymour and the good folks with Shelter Animals Advocates and its HeartBeat Goes On program began to network Ellie to rescues. The next day Dog Star Rescue in Connecticut offered to take Ellie. However, funding was needed for his heartworm treatment costs. Mary Lou requested RADAR’s help, and we agreed.
When Ellie went for her initial vetting on July 26th, the vet determined that Ellie’s swollen left eye was painful, had no vision and needed to be removed. Thanks to the quick commitment of several generous RADAR supporters, we were able to cover the eye surgery costs, much to the relief Shelter Animals Advocates. On July 27th, Ellie had her heartworm treatment done and her left eye removed. Click here to view more photos of Ellie.
On a very sad note… when a shelter volunteer went to tell the elderly couple that Ellie was safe and her medical needs were covered, the volunteer was told that the elderly husband had died in a car accident.
RADAR paid all of Ellie’s heartworm treatment and eye enucleation costs, which totaled $734.
