Elsie is much more than just another Darlington dog! She is the 350th dog RADAR has assisted in 2014! This three to four-year-old German Shepherd mix was surrendered by her owner to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina on May 12th. After her arrival, Elsie tested heartworm positive. Elsie and six other dogs ended up on the shelter’s put to sleep list for July 2nd.

On June 29th, RADAR offered to assist with Elsie’s heartworm treatment as an incentive for a rescue to take her. However, she had no rescue interest, and soon her time was up. A foster home was found, but she continued to wait, month after month, with no rescue expressing any interest in taking in Elsie.

Finally, on October 28th, Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue and a volunteer with Caring for Creatures in Virginia, reported the good news to us that Caring for Creatures was taking Elsie! On November 6th, Elsie arrived at Caring for Creatures and was renamed Margie. She received her heartworm treatments on November 15th and December 18th.

“Elsie is petite and wiggly,” Susan told us. “And she loves to smile! Elsie is ready to crawl up in your lap and make it her own! She’s a playful, interactive girl with other dogs. Elsie is a skilled leash walker and has a happy, cheerful disposition. Elsie is so eager to share her love! Elsie was a little shell–shocked after being surrendered by her family. But now Elsie is ready for her forever family!” Click here to see more photos of Elsie.

RADAR paid all of the heartworm treatment costs for Elsie, which totaled $365.

UPDATE! Elsie (now Margie) has been adopted! Caring for Creatures president, Mary Birkholz, shared this with us: “Margie is in a wonderful home and loved very much. Thank you RADAR for all the lives you have saved!”

UPDATE! All funds for Elsie have been raised! Thank you!
