It seemed like just another endless day of silent suffering for this terribly neglected two-year old Shar-Pei. But on Thursday, September 6th, Fifi’s fate took a sudden turn when she was picked up by animal control and taken to the Darlington County Animal Shelter in South Carolina.
The shelter staff quickly discovered that Fifi had a laundry list of ailments, including skin issues from burrowing mites, eye infection, entropion eyelids, and, just for good measure, heartworms.
The staff thought Fifi was blind, but fortunately after a few days of eye drop treatments, she does have vision! At first Fifi didn’t want to interact with anyone (and who could blame her after what she has been through), but within a few days she would get excited every time a staff member approached her.
Fifi was still very much at risk in her condition in this high-kill shelter. But by Monday the volunteers with one of RADAR’s partners, the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue (DCHSR), were busy networking to find a rescue to take Fifi. RADAR offered help with some funding, if DCHSR could find a rescue. By Tuesday, another RADAR partner, RescuedMe in North Carolina, agreed to take Fifi! And by noon she was out of the shelter and on her way to her temporary foster home.
With the costs for treating Fifi expected to be well over $1000, the next hurdle was money. On Tuesday, RADAR offered to help by leveraging its assistance. If DCHSR could raise $700, RADAR would commit to $300 towards Fifi’s vet expenses. By late Wednesday DCHSR had reached its goal! The final amount that RADAR paid was $387 towards her heartworm treatment. Click here to see more photos of Fifi.
UPDATE! On September 14th, Fifi was spayed and had her entropian eye surgery. She needs to recover a bit before her HW treatment starts. Also, on a side note, her skin is much less irritated than before. Check out her photos.
UPDATE! Fifi is now fully funded! Thank you!
UPDATE! Fifi had her heartworm treatment on November 8th.
