Gabriel

Gabriel was surrendered by his owner to the Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina on July 23rd. Just like the biblical messenger angel, Gabriel delivered unconditional love to all he met. He asked little of the world but some companionship and caretaking. But Gabriel was heartworm positive and could not be adopted to the public. He also had a slight limp from an old injury to a back leg. The two conditions made him, in the eyes of the shelter, a dog that had to be put down.

Mary Lou Seymour, of The Heart Beat Goes On program, hoped to find a rescue that would pull Gabriel. A woman who can accomplish much on a wing and a prayer, she began networking the affable Pit Bull mix on August 8th. On August 15th, the Palmetto Animal Welfare Society said they would take Gabriel if funding for his heartworm treatment could be found. With time running out, Mary Lou made an urgent plea to RADAR on August 17th: “Gabriel’s last day is today.” We immediately agreed to help, and Gabriel was safe on August 18th. He had his heartworm treatment on August 27th.

Gabriel is three years old and weighs 48 pounds. His foster family says that he is very sweet and loving. He gets along with all of his doggy step-siblings. He is not food aggressive; to the contrary, he likes being rubbed while he eats! He is house-trained, leash trained, rides nicely in the car (he doesn’t put his feet up on the dash!) and loves kids, toys and hugs. Anyone who adopts this kind soul is on the side of the angels! RADAR paid all of Gabriel’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $299.
