Gatsby, a two- to three-year-old Shepherd mix, shares a few of the same qualities as F. Scott Fitzgerald’s character Jay Gatsby. He’s got undeniably good looks, he’s very charming, and he’s the life of the party! Sadly, this Gatsby ended up at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina on October 27th as a stray after he was found wandering loose in a neighborhood for a few days. Gatsby spent months in the shelter just waiting to be rescued or adopted, but one big thing was holding him back: he was heartworm positive.

When To Love A Canine Rescue in Southeast Pennsylvania expressed interest on January 3rd in pulling Gatsby, the only obstacle was the cost of his heartworm treatment. But Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, knew just what to do: request our help! We agreed, and Gatsby had his heartworm treatment done on January 22nd.

Gatsby was a shelter favorite, winning the superlative titles of “happiest dog,” “teddy bear dog,” and “most  handsome!” Everyone who met Gatsby loved him. He was described as being very affectionate, friendly, sweet, loving, goofy and playful! Gatsby has a smile on his face almost all the time and would love to put a smile on your face too! His soft and lush coat makes him a perfect cuddle bug! Click here to view more photos of Gatsby.

RADAR paid all of Gatsby’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $357.
