According to her foster mom, “Hailey is a hoot!” This 18-month-old German Shepherd arrived at the Sampson County Animal Shelter in North Carolina on June 12th. Hailey was emaciated, weighing in at just over 30 pounds. She was filthy, smelly and had chunks of fur sticking out everywhere. Even worse, Hailey was heartworm positive. As June turned to July, Hailey was running out of time at this high-kill shelter.

On July 2nd, in response to requests for our help with Hailey and another at-risk, heartworm-positve German Shepherd, Gladis, RADAR made offers to assist with the heartworm treatment for both dogs as incentives for rescues to take them. On July 6th, the German Shepherd Rescue and Adoptions (GSRA) in North Carolina agreed to take Hailey! But wait, there’s more. The next day GSRA agreed to take Gladis as well!

Thanks to the TLC of her foster mom, Hailey is making quite the comeback. She has gained some much-needed weight. Gone is her filth and stench, and her fur is improving. Because Hailey was so underweight, her heartworm treatment was delayed until September 9th.

Her foster mom also shared this with us: “Hailey is awesome! She is a sweet little girl who just wants to be near her people. She will run up to you and sit in front of you looking up, eager for acknowledgement. She is one of the happiest dogs I have ever met! She trots around with a bounce in her step, wagging her tail, and just delighted with life. Hailey is a playful goof, and is obsessed with her tennis ball! She loves other dogs and seems to be fine with cats. She is just an all-around great girl!” To see more photos of Hailey, click here.

RADAR paid $250 towards Hailey’s heartworm treatment costs.
