Just like the little girl in the classic story, Heidi was an orphan who needed a home. A two to three-year-old Shepherd mix, Heidi was a stray who came to the Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina on May 11th. Her yodeling skills were dubious, but there was no question about her heartworm test: positive. Heidi did not have a grandfather in the Swiss Alps to rescue her. Her eyes on the cuckoo clock, Heidi tried to stay cheerful and positive because that’s what good characters do.
Mary Lou Seymour of The Heart Beat Goes On program can’t yodel but she has no problem saying “Yo, this dog needs help!” Mary Lou began reaching out to rescues on May 16th. Operation Paws For Homes in Virginia expressed interest in taking Heidi on May 29th but couldn’t shoulder the full burden of the cost of the heartworm treatment. Mary Lou asked RADAR for assistance and we agreed to help. Heidi was safe on June 2nd! She had her heartworm treatment on June 18th.
Heidi has a strong exterior. She is shy outside of her kennel and with her human caregivers, but does not like her space to be invaded. She will raise a lip if approached by another dog, but she doesn’t escalate. The other dogs take the cue and walk on. Heidi even knows how to rub her own belly by stretching out prone on the grass and wiggling! A firm and balanced human hand will soften Heidi’s defenses and give her a sense of security that “the human” is in charge. Heidi already has complete manners. The next chapter of Heidi’s adventures will show her playing happily with her peers! Click here to view more photos of Heidi.
RADAR paid all $299 of the heartworm treatment costs for Heidi.
