Hershey is just as sweet as the chocolate that shares her name! And her heartbreaking story will demonstrate a dog’s loyalty. Two to three years old, this Labrador Retriever mix arrived at the Chesterfield County Animal Services shelter in South Carolina on April 11th, when her owner was found deceased. The local police reported that Hershey was sitting by her departed owner’s side when they arrived, even though he had been dead for three days. With her owner having no other immediate family, Hershey was taken to the shelter. The staff was smitten with her, and desperately worked to try to save Hershey, which was made all the more difficult with her being heartworm positive.
On June 25th, Deanna Dixon with the shelter contacted RADAR to see if we could provide an offer to assist with Hershey’s heartworm treatment as an incentive for a rescue to take her. We provided an offer the same day. On July 6th, one of our rescue partners, Paws for Seniors in Virginia, expressed interest in taking Hershey! She left the shelter for her temporary foster home on July 22nd. Unfortunately, during Hershey’s initial vetting she was diagnosed with a luxating patella on her back right knee, which would require surgery to correct. She had her surgery and spaying done on August 12th, and the next day she received her heartworm treatment.
“Hershey is a friendly dog, she is good with other animals, and loves children,” Deanna told us. “Hershey loved to swim in her water bucket, and tried to get her kennel mates to join her, it was the funniest thing to watch! She is one that all of us at the shelter loved so much, and wanted to see this sweet girl find her fur-ever home!” To see more photos of Hershey, click here.
RADAR paid all $310 of the heartworm treatment costs for Hershey.
