The efforts to save Izzy were enough to make everyone dizzy! On July 20th, this three-year-old Labrador Retriever mix was surrendered to the Duplin County Animal Shelter in North Carolina. The odds of saving Izzy were stacked against her. Not only was she a black dog, but she also tested positive for heartworms.
On July 23rd, Gretchen Kozen, a Duplin animal advocate and RADAR liaison for the shelter, urgently reached out to us and asked for our help with Izzy. “The shelter is full,” Gretchen told us. “Since Izzy is an owner surrender, she can be put to sleep at any time.” We provided an offer to assist with her heartworm treatment costs as an incentive for a rescue to take her. On July 26th, Ruby’s Misfits Animal Rescue in North Carolina committed to taking Izzy! She began her heartworm treatment medications on July 28th. Maisy, Izzy’s sister, was also rescued by Ruby’s Misfits and helped with a RADAR grant.
The rescue had this to share with us from Izzy: “I am so sweet and the perfect loving dog! I am so thankful Ruby’s Misfits rescued me and my sister Bella from the shelter and that RADAR helped us to make our freedom ride possible. My long black hair flows in the wind as I run and play! A treat will get me to do anything you want! Want me to sit? Just give me a treat and I’ll sit on your lap all day long!” Click here to view more photos of Izzy.
RADAR paid all of Izzy’s heartworm treatment medication costs, which totaled $258.
UPDATE! All funds for Izzy have been raised! Thank you!
