What would it take to save Jake? A rescue commitment and a fair amount of funding. One to two-year-old Jake is a unique blend of Hound and Shar Pei! He was picked up as a stray by animal control on March 29th and taken to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. Not surprisingly, he tested heartworm positive. Because he weighed 66 pounds, his heartworm treatment would be more costly than usual, which only made it more difficult for Jake to get adopted or rescued.
On May 2nd, Home At Last Dog Rescue in Pennsylvania offered to take Jake IF his heartworm treatment costs could be provided. It would be challenging, but Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, decided to see if we could help. Counting on the support of our donors, we agreed to cover Jake’s heartworm treatment costs to secure his rescue commitment. He had his heartworm treatment on May 17th.
Susan provided this bio of Jake from the shelter: “Who wouldn’t love such a sweet scrunchy face! He would plop down on the ground and roll over to have his belly scratched. He greeted strangers nicely. He was friendly, but not pushy. Jake is a sweet, gentle boy for his giant size and calmer than would be expected for a young dog. Jake’s a very nice boy!” To view more photos of Jake, click here.
RADAR paid all of Jake’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $368.
