Janie’s puppies showed up at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina a week or so before she did. When the caring rescue who saved the three puppies realized Janie was their mama, they did not want to leave her behind. Janie, a two-year-old Labrador Retriever mix was picked up as a stray and brought to the shelter on December 9th. This young girl was not only recovering from giving birth, she was also heartworm positive. Although she had a beautiful sleek black coat, black dogs have a disadvantage in getting adopted or rescued.
When Puppy Paws Rescue in Maryland realized that Janie was the mom of the puppies they had rescued, they were determined to help her. But Puppy Paws Rescue needed help with Janie’s expensive heartworm treatment. Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, contacted RADAR on December 27th to see if we could assist. We committed to helping Janie, and she finished her heartworm treatment on January 21st. Meanwhile, Janie’s three pups were transported to rescue on January 4th.
Susan had met Janie and talked to the shelter volunteers about her. “Janie is a sweet, gentle-natured lady. She’s retiring her mommy apron strings and ready for a full-time pet position. If you enjoy having a calm, doting dog in your lap, Janie is the gal for you! Quiet and a bit shy when you first meet, Janie was happy to hitch a ride on a volunteer’s hip to head out to our front field for photo time. Her whole face lit up when she saw another friendly dog eagerly awaiting her arrival in the exercise area and the two of them slowly and cautiously explored and enjoyed their space together. A quiet home with a well-balanced four-legged companion to help her settle in would perfectly suit her style and help her to be at her best.” Be sure to view more photos in Janie’s gallery.
RADAR paid all $214 of the heartworm treatment costs for Janie.
