This Jonah was not having a whale of a time. Blind and approximately seven years old, Jonah was found as a stray on March 3rd and taken to the Smyth County Animal Shelter in Virginia. Not only was he a senior, black and blind, but he also walked with a limp on his back left leg. A Labrador Retriever-German Shepherd mix, the kind and gentle Jonah was an immediate hit with the shelter staff, who fell in love with him! But Jonah’s life was at risk in this small rural shelter, and due to his special needs, he was only available to rescues.
On March 9th, the folks at the shelter reached out to RADAR for help with Jonah (who was originally named Noah). We provided an offer to assist with his vetting costs as an incentive for a rescue to pull Jonah. A few days later, City Dogs Rescue in Washington, DC, committed to taking Jonah!
Jonah had his vetting done on March 22nd. In addition to getting neutered, he also had x-rays taken of his hips and back legs. The vet told us that, unfortunately, Jonah’s left hip is dislocated. This is an old injury and there is extensive scarring limiting the range of motion of the joint. There are also chronic degenerative changes to his back left knee joint as a result of another old injury. Fortunately, Jonah has relatively decent function of the leg considering the extent of the injuries. “He has a remarkable spirit,” the vet said, “given that he is blind and has lived with these limb injuries.”
“Jonah is calm, well-mannered and knows some commands.” the shelter staff shared with us. “He loved the attention he received from the shelter staff. He walked slowly to learn his new surroundings and nudged people gently to make their acquaintance. He is a beautiful, gentle soul.” To see more photos of Jonah, click here.
RADAR paid $250 towards the neutering and x-ray costs for Jonah.
