One could say that it was a Dickens of a December for Jordy, in that it was the worst of times followed by the best of times. This ten-year-old Basset Hound was picked up as a stray on December 18th, and taken to the Duplin County Animal Shelter in North Carolina. Poor Jordy had a large, open tumor on his leg, his nails were growing into his pads and he needed dental care. It clearly was the worst of times for Jordy.
On December 20th, Gretchen Kozen, Duplin animal advocate and RADAR liaison for the shelter, sought our help for Jordy (known as Old Man at the shelter). We provided an offer to assist with his vetting costs to encourage a rescue to take him. Almost immediately the Carolina Basset Hound Rescue in South Carolina agreed to take Jordy! He was out of the shelter and off to a foster home on December 22nd.
Jordy had his tumor surgery and dental treatment, including several extractions, on December 29th. The pathology report indicated that the tumor was malignant. However, the vet got clean margins and the oncologist indicated that there was less than a 30% chance that it will metastasize. The staff at the vet hospital voted him “most popular and most likely to succeed!” Everyone who meets Jordy just adores him, and he is quite the perfect gentleman!
Here are some diary entries from Jordy at his foster home: “It’s been heaven living with my foster family. I was loved a lot once before, and it’s nice to have so much love to give and receive again. I’ve been learning to use my voice and it’s fun, but I never woof first. That would be rude. I love to take walks, and occasionally I move to a trot, especially if we are going downhill! I love to smell new things in the grass, and stop and look at the stairs leading to the front porches of all the houses. I wonder if each house has food and comfy beds like my foster house.” Indeed, it turned out to be the best of times of Jordy. To see more photos of Jordy, click here.
RADAR paid $250 towards Jordy’s tumor surgery and dental treatment costs.

UPDATE! Jordy has been adopted!
UPDATE Jordy crossed the Rainbow Bridge on April 29, 2016. Stacey from Carolina Basset Hound Rescue told us, “It pains me to write you with this news, but Jordy is losing his battle to cancer. Thankfully, he was adopted to a family who loves him more than life. He had back pain last week and the doctors were hoping it was typical back strain common in bassets. The family had an MRI done today and he has metastatic disease in his bones. They will spend today and tonight loving him and showering him with all that he wants and will send him to the bridge tomorrow. We are all so heartbroken.” Rest in Peace, Jordy.
