When animal control noticed that Carter, a Bully Breed mix, did not have adequate shelter, they approached his owner. Only then did they discover Kayla, Dolphin and Minnie. All three of them were female Black Lab mixes approximately three to four years old. They were confined to a very dirty ten-foot square kennel. Even worse, they had no food or water, and were extremely thin. All four dogs were surrendered on January 5th to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. As for their owner, he faced misdemeanor neglect charges.
Kayla, Dolphin and Minnie all tested positive for heartworms, but luckily for Carter, he did not. Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, urgently requested our heartworm help for Kayla, Dolphin and Minnie on January 8th. In a wonderful triple play move, Home At Last Dog Rescue in Pennsylvania would take all three dogs if the costs of their heartworm treatment could be provided. Of course, we agreed! Kayla and Dolphin had their heartworm treatment done on February 13th. Minnie is still in queue for her treatment.
Kayla, Dolphin and Minnie were very overwhelmed when they entered the shelter. We were told that they were very clingy with each other. They needed a little time to decompress (and get warm and get full bellies) so that their real personalities could be revealed. Their photographer told us this: “Kayla, who was shy at first, is now like a new dog. She is happy and loving!” Click here to view more photos of Kayla.
RADAR paid all of Kayla’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $220.
