Leonardo da Vinci is forever linked to his famous Mona Lisa, and this Leonardo is bonded to his best friend Louise! At least nine years old, Leonardo and seven-year-old Louise, both Boxer mixes, were surrendered by their family to the Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina in early July. No reason for their surrender was given. The dogs were at grave risk at this high-kill rural shelter. It didn’t help that they were older dogs, larger dogs and both heartworm positive. It would be difficult enough to find a rescue for either of one them, let alone for both of them to stay together.
While a rescue agreed to take Louise, Leonardo was still in danger. On July 5th, RADAR provided an offer to assist with the heartworm treatment costs for Leonardo as an incentive for a rescue to take him. On July 8th, Paws Crossroads Animal Rescue in Pennsylvania committed to take Leonardo! When the rescue taking Louise got word that she was at least seven years old instead the original estimate of three, they were unable to take her. Fortunately, Paws Crossroads Animal Rescue, with assistance from RADAR, was able to commit to take Louise as well, which allowed the bonded Boxers to stay together! Both dogs had their heartworm treatment done on July 16th.
Paws Crossroads Animal Rescue had this to share with us: “Leonardo and Louise are an absolutely charming pair of bonded seniors. We believe they might be father and daughter. They get along with other dogs, and aren’t bothered by cats. They adore children. They are crate-trained and housebroken. They love people and all attention. These two sweethearts have so much life left in them, and so much love to give. Truly they have hearts of gold and deserve a loving retirement home to call their own!” Click here to see more photos of Leonardo.
RADAR paid $250 towards Leonardo’s heartworm treatment costs.
