Oh boy, Leroy thought he was safe and rescued, and then he wasn’t! This mid-sized, one-year-old Hound mix arrived as a stray to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina on November 26th. This shy little guy tested positive for heartworms at a young age. Leroy would need some extra cash or credit to have his heartworms treated, as treatment is expensive. Would Leroy get a chance to live out the rest of his life as a healthy, cared for dog?

Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, first contacted us on December 16th. A rescue was interested in Leroy if he would first receive heartworm treatment. We agreed to help and it seemed everything was going Leroy’s way, but then the rescue lost their foster home and could not take Leroy. Luckily, To Love A Canine Rescue in Pennsylvania stepped up for Leroy on December 30th. Susan contacted us the same day and we still were willing and able to help Leroy. He had his split heartworm treatments on January 14th and February 18th.

And now as dictated by Leroy to Susan: “Sweet, petite me! My name is Leroy and I am just about the cutest little (32 pound) brown and tan fellow in the county. I am feeling a little overwhelmed here at the shelter but there are big hopes for me and you can help! A new home with a confident dog will make me smile, and add in a quiet, calm environment and I will blossom. I am fine being toted around (who cares if the other dogs laugh at me!) and will do some random darting on a leash but am willing to work on this skill set. Never, ever bitey or nippy, I’m just a shy guy looking for a low-key, patient family to help lead me to pet success!” Be sure to view more photos in Leroy’s gallery.

RADAR paid all of Leroy’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $305.
