In the lyrics of Liza Minnelli, “It’s Liza with a Z, not Lisa with an S.” This four to five-year-old Hound mix was an owner surrender to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina on October 15th. The shelter staff described Liza as “a big and beautiful strong girl who is very attentive, listens well, and focuses on her person.” While she was already spayed, sadly, she was heartworm positive. On January 19th she was listed on the shelter’s “put to sleep” list for January 25th.

With Liza’s time up, there was a last-minute offer on the table. Caring for Creatures in Virginia would take Liza if funding was available for her heartworm treatment. Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, urgently requested our help for Liza. We immediately agreed and Liza was safe! She received her heartworm treatment on February 7th.

Susan, who met Liza at the shelter in late December and took some of her photos, had this to tell us: “She’s a fantastic dog! Despite her glamorous name, she’s low maintenance in her lifestyle! She doesn’t ask for much, just some love and attention. She’s bubbly and friendly. Liza’s your go-to kind of gal when you are looking for a companion who is terrific with other dogs, unflappable and ready to go and do. She loves squeaky toys and having playdates with other dogs!” Click here to view more photos of Liza.

RADAR paid all of Liza’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $380.
