Louie’s life was on the line, and not just once, but twice. This 18-month-old Australian Cattle Dog-Pit Bull mix was one of 11 dogs found chained outside and starving in Rowan County, North Carolina. Animal control responded immediately after an anonymous caller alerted them on June 12th. That same day, all 11 dogs were seized and taken to the Rowan County Animal Shelter. The animal control officers indicated that the dogs were near death, and had been without food or water for some time. A local vet volunteered her services to exam the dogs and provide essential vet treatment. She determined that all the dogs should fully recover with proper care.

Of the 11 dogs, five were adopted (four of those were puppies), but Louie and the five other adult dogs languished at the shelter. They had little time to spare. If they weren’t adopted or taken by a rescue by June 25th, Louie and the five other dogs would be euthanized.

Laura Roberts of Road Home Rescue in North Carolina and Connie Ray, an animal advocate and foster who lives in Rowan County, refused to allow these dogs to die after all that they had been through. Laura contacted RADAR for assistance, and we agreed to help. Laura and Connie worked together to save all six dogs! Connie is fostering Louie, Libby, Lizzy and Lola, and Laura is fostering Chloe and Vinny.

Louie, Libby and Lizzy tested heartworm positive. On July 17th they received their heartworm treatment at the Bayleaf Veterinary Hospital. In addition to the vet providing an extraordinary discount, an anonymous staff member paid for the microchipping of all three dogs! Laura shared this with us: “They are the sweetest dogs, and all of them are very adoptable.” Click here to see more photos of Louie.

RADAR paid all of the $101 heartworm treatment costs for Louie.
