If a tick was found on Luna, what would you call it? Yes, a Luna-tick! Approximately four years old, Luna is a Labrador Retriever mix who arrived on March 27th at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. Tied to a tree her entire life, Luna finally was set free when a sheriff’s deputy took her to the shelter after her owner went to the hospital. Of course, going to the shelter really didn’t set Luna free. Luna’s clock began ticking during her days at the shelter. Her fur was rough from a lack of nutrition and being out in the weather in all seasons. She also tested heartworm positive. Being a black dog who was heartworm positive did not bode well for Luna.

Exactly two months after her arrival at the shelter, and with her time up, Furever Friends Rescue in New York offered to take Luna! But there was one caveat: Luna needed to get her heartworm treatment done and the cost covered. RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, Susan Blakeney, sought our assistance and we agreed at once, sealing the deal for Luna. She received her heartworm treatment on July 15th.

Susan told us this about Luna: “She is easygoing and appreciates any attention you give her. She loves to sit while you brush her, pet her, and talk to her. Luna loves leash walks, enjoying the new smells and scenes that she was never able to experience until now. With good nutrition, her coat will come in shiny and more healthy. She also has one blue and one brown eye. She gets along with other dogs large and small. Luna is a well-behaved adult who wants nothing more than to have a family of her own and to live in a home, not in a yard.” To view more photos of Luna, click here.

RADAR paid all of the heartworm treatment costs for Luna, which totaled $327.
