The name Mabel means lovable. And this Mabel sure lives up to her name! But would we be able to save Mabel? A stray Pit Bull mix, Mabel (originally named Sailor) was about a year old when she arrived at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina on September 11th. Not only was she heartworm positive, but she was overlooked in the kennel run where her mild manner allowed her to fade into the background and be overshadowed by her more flashy kennel mate. With the shelter overflowing, on October 8th, Mabel was placed on a short notice “put to sleep” list for October 10th.
On October 8th, we received an urgent request to help Mabel from Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue. We immediately agreed to assist with Mabel’s heartworm treatment as an incentive for a rescue to take her. And just in time, Virginia Paws for Pits agreed to take Mabel! Her foster mom, Katie, is vet tech student.
Then, on October 23rd, we got some surprising news: Mabel was very pregnant! In early November she gave birth to five healthy puppies. The rescue told us that Katie did an amazing job dealing with this unexpected family. After all of the pups were weaned, Mabel finally got her heartworm treatment done on January 21st.
Katie had this good news to share with us about Mabel: “My cousin, her husband, and their three children adopted her. She is loving her adoptive family, and sleeps between two of the children every night! I am so grateful Mabel will stay in my life forever, and that she will still be able to play with my dog because they became quite attached. All of the puppies have also been adopted into loving homes.” Click here to see more photos of Mabel.
RADAR paid for Mabel’s heartworm treatment costs, totaling $254.
